In THIS economy.
Although I do not typically hype up events where there will be more than ten people in attendance and where I would have to find parking in the downtown core, (Jesus, take the wheel) here are five reasons why you, as an Information Management professional, should attend the ARMA Canada Conference.
(This reason is for Calgarians) - it's in Calgary. No travel required. Just hop on the C-Train or the bus or your reluctant spouse's car and you're off to the races.
(This reason is for non-Calgarians) - it's in Calgary. Time to get out of town for a few days and enjoy all that Calgary has to offer. (Bakeries. See me for an extensive list.)
The members of the ARMA Calgary Chapter Board will be there (which includes me) (yes I joined the board) (what a time to be alive) and it will be a great opportunity to come share any feedback with us, make connections within the IM space and to exchange knitting patterns.
Speaking of knitting patterns. I would suggest that an alternative name for the ARMA Canada Conference could be Advanced Knitters of Canada Who Also Coincidentally Share A Passion For Accepted Principles of Records-Keeping.
This conference is also a really good opportunity to meet and make friends with Other People Who Love Cats.
And libraries.
But I digress.
Industry Tea - get it while it's piping hot. What's the 411? What has everybody been talking about? What has everybody been doing? What has everybody been talking about what everybody's been doing? Who's all over there? And although you CAN technically "google it," that's boring. And preposterous. Just come to the conference instead.
If you attend any pre-conference workshops, the credits gained from those workshops can be applied to your Continuing Education (diploma? certificate?) through ARMA. Work smarter, not harder.
Networking - Look. I know. I get it. I became a consultant and was immediately appalled by the amount of networking I was then required to do. The last time I went to an ARMA Canada Conference, I spoke to NOBODY and then I went back to my job and lied to my boss about the people I'd met and the connections I made. (Apologies to my former boss, Jessica.) But despite the moral ambiguity of Morgan (Morgan is my evil twin), it actually is really nice to get together and learn from each other. I'm not just saying that. I mean it. And plus, we're all a little awkward. Lean into it. Make it more awkward.
The relaxing feeling of being in a room full of people who care about the same things as you, professionally speaking, is a feeling I would hope that everyone gets to have at least once in their lifetime. As IM Professionals, it's kind of hard to find someone who cares about the same stuff as you do if you're not working with a ton of other IM Professionals. Like, there's usually solidarity in your department, but look ye not for solace outside these walls. You generally have to be your own hype man within your organization. And like, it's fine, I'll gently peer pressure others if I have to, but the ARMA Canada Conference creates a space for us to just be weird together, to benefit from that support and collective knowledge for a few days, and I think that's awesome.
The FOOD. If you, like me, enjoy eating food, this alone should be reason enough.
Hope to see you there! Here is registration link : Home (goeshow.com)
